If you search for national averages, you will get the wrong number. Paving in Texas is different. Why? Because we sit on top of some of the most difficult soil in America (Expansive Clay) and we deal with surface temperatures that can reach 140°F in August.

In 2026, while the national average for asphalt is rising, Texas benefits from being close to the refineries (lower material transport cost). However, the preparation cost here is higher. If you don’t stabilize the ground in Houston or DFW, your driveway will crack like a dry riverbed within 12 months.

Pricing by Metro Area

🤠

Dallas / Fort Worth

The Challenge: Black Gumbo Clay. The soil expands when wet.

⚠️ Must use 8″+ Base or Lime Treatment.

$7.00 – $10.00 / sq. ft.

🚀

Houston / Gulf

The Challenge: High Water Table & Humidity.

ℹ️ Drainage is priority #1.

$6.50 – $9.00 / sq. ft.

🎸

Austin / San Antonio

The Benefit: Limestone Bedrock.

✅ Cheaper Prep. Rock is stable.

$5.00 – $7.50 / sq. ft.

🔥 Texas Heat vs. Asphalt: The “Binder” Secret

Standard asphalt melts at high temperatures. In Texas, where pavement can hit 150°F, using a cheap Northern mix will cause “rutting” (tire tracks) in your driveway.

The Solution: Ask your contractor for PG 70-22 Binder (Performance Grade). It is stiffer and designed for Southern heat.

TxDOT Spec Recommendations:

  • Surface: Type D (Fine Mix) – Smooth finish.
  • Base: Type B (Coarse Mix) – Strength.
  • Thickness: Minimum 3″ Compacted (See our Thickness Guide).

Texas Paving FAQs

Is Asphalt or Concrete better for Texas?
Concrete is king in Texas because it handles heat better and doesn’t soften. However, Asphalt is 40-50% cheaper upfront and easier to repair if the clay soil shifts. See comparison here.
Do I need a permit to pave my driveway in Texas?
In rural areas (County land), usually no. In cities (Dallas, Austin, Houston), YES. You almost always need a permit for the “Apron” (where the driveway meets the public road).
